플라톤의 대화편 『라케스』는 교육에 대한 아테네 사람들의 의견을 명증하게 보여주는 저작이라는 점에서 교육학자들의 연구를 필요로 하는 저작이다. 『라케스』에서는 『국가』, 『메논』, 『향연』 등 전통적인 교육학적 연구 대상에서는 명확히 드러나지 않았던 고대 아테네 사회 학부형들의 교육에 대한 인식과, 이에 대한 자문을 요청받은 전문가 집단의 교육 이해, 마지막으로 당대 최고의 명사였던 니키아스와 라케스의 주장을 반박하고 진정한 교육적 지향을 요구하는 소크라테스의 제안 등을 확인할 수 있다. 아테네의 두 시민인 리시마코스와 멜레시아스는 아들들에게 무장전투 교육을 시킬지 여부를 놓고 고민하고 있다. 고대 아테네에서 무장전투 교육은 오늘날 연상되는 군사훈련과는 구분되며, 당대 아테네 사회에서 출세와 입신양명을 위해 가장 요구되었던 기술에 해당한다. 자녀들의 사회적 성공을 위해 사교육을 희망했던 이들은 사회의 명사 니키아스와 라케스에게 조언을 요청한다. 학부형들은 두 전문가들이 무장전투와 용기에 대해 가장 확실한 식견을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대하며 자문을 청했지만, 무장전투의 유용성과 효과성에 대해 아테네를 대표하는 두 장군들의 의견은 상반된다. 서로의 의견이 충돌하자 이들은 소크라테스에게 도움을 청한다. 소크라테스는 니키아스와 라케스의 논의를 검토한 후 니키아스는 용기와 교육에 대한 체계적인 식견을 갖추지 못했음을 비판했다. 라케스의 주장에 대해서는 니키아스보다 호의적으로 검토하지만, 이 역시 당초 그의 주장과는 부합하지 못함을 증명해낸다. 소크라테스의 관여로 리시마코스와 멜레시아스가 촉발시킨 논의는 난관에 부딪히게 되지만, 이를 통해 소크라테스는 당대 가장 핵심적인 교육적 가치로 공인되었던 무장전투와 용기에 대해 문제제기하는 동시에 새로운 인간형을 제안하고 있다. 이와 같은 접근 방식은 교육학적 차원에서 『라케스』에 대한 일관된 해석을 가능하게 한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
Abstract
Plato conceived his ideas and thoughts on education from Athenian educational perspectives. For that reason, we need to investigate the Athenian understandings of education to analyse Plato's educational thoughts. His early work, Laches, contains a lot of evidence on the contemporary Athenians' opinions about education. One of the main purposes of educating their children, as we can see in the cases of Lysimachos and Melesias both of whom were fathers of children, was to encourage the child to success in Athens. The two fathers wanted their sons to learn from military experts. They assumed that by doing this they could make their children to be powerful and noble citizens. However, when they asked the famous general Nikias and Laches, they responded differently. Nicias had a more favorable attitude on their tutoring, since the tutoring helped them to be courageous. But Laches proposed a very different opinion about the tutor’s expertise and the meaning of courage. And this led the audience to inquire Socrates. Socrates had to consider the educational atmosphere of the current society. They shared the general opinions that education had a role for the success of their citizens and that it was the courage that decided their success on the battlefields. However, after a short conversation, Socrates concluded that Nicias had insufficient knowledge concerning correct education and true courage. Compared to Nicias, general Laches had a better opinion on true courage, and yet he could not satisfy Socrates’ standard. By disputing with these two celebrities of ancient Athens, Socrates proposed a new ideal on person to be achieved by education. His idea and judgement on ancient Greece showed the standard to construct the educational theory of Plato.
