Abstract

It has been argued that ‘courage(andreia)’ is the central subject of Plato's 『Laches』. Given that the word of courage first appears in the middle of this dialogue (『Laches』, 190d), the early part of the dialogue until 190d is regarded as a preliminary introduction for the discussion of andreia. As a result, the introduction of 『Laches』 has been deemed too long or excessive. However, this is based on the misrepresentation of the central subject of 『Laches』: it is ‘education’, not courage, that is the main subject of the dialogue. This dialogue begins with a scene that two fathers are seeking advice on how to educate their children to be excellent, and ends up agreeing to contemplate it further. Instead of discussing education directly, Plato delves into the subject indirectly by examining the themes of heavy weapons and courage that are familiar to the people of his time. He presents the subject in a series of sophisticated ironies—the irony of the characters, of material, and of drama structure; and this composition of the dialogue makes readers tacitly reach the core of the subject. This article analyzes three ironies in 『Laches』, with an intention of showing that the main subject of 『Laches』 is education.
