자유주의는 옳음(the right)을 추구하는 가운데 개인의 이익을 중심으로 하는 권리 중심의 정치 질서를 지향한다. 이는 자유주의가, 합리적인 판단과 자율적인 선택 능력을 지닌 인간 존재를 가정하는 이유와 관련되기도 한다. 개인의 권리는 공동체에 대한 개인의 기여와 무관하게 독립적인 정당성을 가지며, 공익과 합리적인 개인의 이익이 갈등할 경우 개인의 이익이 우선한다는 생각이다. 이에 비해 공동체주의는 역사와 문화의 맥락 속에서 구성되는 공동체적 자아 개념을 중시하는 동시에, 선 또는 좋음(the good)을 추구한다. 공동선(common good)은 사회적 실행에 내재된 선이며, 사회적 실행은 역사와 문화의 맥락을 담고 있는 언어와 담론의 상호작용에 연고를 두고 있으며, 이러한 사회적 실행을 통해 자아가 구성되는 것으로 간주한다. 사회적 실행은 공동체에 내재된 공동선에서 연역되지만, 그러한 실행은 불완전하고 비합리적인 요소를 안고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사회적 실행은 공동선을 지향했던 선대들의 비판적 의식 활동을 통해 구성되었다는 점에서 그런 만큼 합리적이다. 따라서 구성원은 사회적 실행을 지향하는 과정을 통해 합리성을 경험하고, 그러한 경험을 토대로 다시금 사회적 실행에 들어 있는 비합리성을 비판할 수 있게 된다. 이러한 맥락에서 정치 교육은 실천과 비판의 변증법적 관계를 동형적으로 적용하는 원리를 따라야 한다. 정치는 규정성, 이중성, 양가성 등의 성격을 지닌다. 그래서 진리, 절대, 객관의 존재가 부정되고 차이와 연기가 자리한다. 즉, 정치의 세계는 차연의 세계인 셈이다. 이러한 정치의 성격에 대응하는 정치 교육 역시 차연 관점을 취해야 한다는 결론이 따라 나온다.
Abstract
A liberalism aims for the individual right and the right-oriented political order. This has to do with the prerequisite that human being can rational judgement and autonomous choice. In comparison, communitarianism aims for the good and communal self constructed by historical and cultural context. A common good regards as immanent goodness in social practice, and the social practice is rooted in communicative discourse originated from historical and cultural context. The social practice is incomplete and irrational. Nevertheless, it is rational for the reason that it is constructed by ancestors' critical consciousness. Therefore, community members experience rationality through practicing social practice, and by this rational experience they enable to criticise irrationality in social practice. In this context political education claims the principle that dialectic relation of practice and critics must be applied. Politics is characterized by normativeness and duplicity. So, the truth, the absolute, and the objectivity are denied, instead 'to differ' and 'to defer' are accommodated. In other words, political world is différence world. In this context political education must accommodate the perspective of différence.
