Abstract
The cash has a significant and positive effect on firm value. However, a won invested in cash is worth less on average than a won personally held in cash. Moreover, the additional cash a won in cash holdings, at current levels of cash holdings or leverage, reduces firm value. This result implies that cash liquidities of firms destroy stockholder value. In addition, labor union decreases the marginal value of cash. This result suggests that the capital market penalizes the unionized firms that hold excess cash at the expense of stockholders. The effects of labor union on the marginal value of cash are lower for chaebol firms compared to non-chaebol firms. This result implies that there is an internal capital market. However, the effects of the marginal value of cash decreasing by labor union are higher for financially constrained firms compared to financially unconstrained firms. That is, the effects of the marginal value of cash decreasing by labor union, perceived by shareholders, is higher for financially constrained firms. Accordingly, unionizing the financially constrained firms at current levels of cash holdings or leverage, they undergo a higher value reduction. In conclusion, labor union destroys stockholder value. This result suggests that the capital market penalizes the unionized firms that hold excess cash at the expense of stockholders. Accordingly, unionized firms should seek to maintain an optimal level of cash holdings in order to maximize their value.
