Abstract
This study investigates how residents’ perceptions of local innovativeness and the social economy influence their satisfaction with the region, and further analyzes how sense of community and perceptions of local economic development mediate these relationships. Using survey responses from 7,146 adults aged 19 to 69 residing in 62 basic local governments nationwide, the study examines the structural relationships through which various social and economic factors shape local satisfaction. The results show that perceived local innovativeness is the most influential factor enhancing local satisfaction. When residents evaluate their region as capable of solving problems and fostering an innovative environment, their overall satisfaction and positive assessment of the locality increase substantially. Perception of the social economy also exerts a direct positive effect on local satisfaction; residents who believe that social economy activities contribute to their communities tend to report higher life satisfaction and stronger attachment to their region. Moreover, both factors operate through a significant mediating pathway involving residents’sense of community. Stronger communal ties, solidarity, and interpersonal cohesion among residents further amplify the positive effects of local innovativeness and social economy perception on overall satisfaction. Perceptions of local economic development serve as an additional mediating mechanism, demonstrating that residents’ confidence in the vitality and growth potential of their local economy constitutes an important pathway that elevates local satisfaction. Drawing on these findings, the study suggests several policy implications. Local governments should expand resident-led programs that strengthen perceived innovation capacity, enhance public awareness of the social economy, institutionalize community education for children and adolescents, and develop localized development models tailored to regional characteristics. Furthermore, the results underscore the need to design mutually reinforcing strategies that align resident-centered social innovation with policies promoting local economic revitalization to support sustainable regional development.
