Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of environmental innovation on exploratory innovation, examining the mediating effect of process innovation and the moderating effect of different types of external collaboration in this relationship. The analysis utilizes data from the Korea Innovation Survey (KIS) by the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), covering data from 1,241 companies in 2022. The findings indicate that environmental innovation promotes exploratory innovation, and this relationship is mediated by process innovation. Furthermore, the analysis of the moderating effect of external collaboration shows that partnerships with public research institutions and government agencies have a positive moderating effect on exploratory innovation, while collaboration with external firms has a negative moderating effect due to goal misalignment and decision-making complexity. These results provide important insights into understanding the mechanisms by which environmental innovation contributes to sustainable growth and competitiveness in companies. The study suggests that companies should leverage environmental innovation as a strategic means to create new market opportunities and enhance resource allocation efficiency.
