Abstract

After Vālmiki had gathered the poems about Rāma's whole life with his heroic deeds and created the epic Rāmāyaṇa for the first time, Rāma-Kathā (literally means ‘story of Rāma’) have been constantly reconstituted by those from various communities in different regions and dates. Each retelling reflects the values, beliefs, social fabric, and the ties of kinship, etc. according to its regions and dates. In Sanskrit literature, one of the most representative poets of Rāma-Kathā after Vālmiki is Kālidāsa. Unlike Vālmiki’s traditional heritage, Kālidāsa, in his epic poem Raghuvanśam (literally means ‘lineage of Raghu’), narrates the kings of Raghu dynasty where Rāma belongs to. In this respect, Raghuvanśam has a unique status in the Rāma-Kathā tradition. Kālidāsa himself mentions in the preface of the poem (sarga 1/ślokas 1-10) that he will recites the story of the kings of Raghu dynasty following Vālmiki’s traditional heritage, but differently from other narratives. Kālidāsa enumerates the characteristics of Raghu dynasty at the beginning, and then illustrates how those characteristics are manifest in the kings’ life and reign in sarga 19. In this article, based on Raghuvanśam text, the story of the kings of Raghu dynasty has been analyzed from the perspective of Rājadharma (literally means ‘dharma of the rulers’). In Raghuvanśam, Rāma-Kathā is described from sarga 9 to sarga 15, and here, Rāma is identified as the 7th avatar of Lord Viṣṇu, and the features of Rāma-Kathā of Raghuvanśam show the influence of Rājadharma. On that basis, I have looked into the reflection of Kālidāsa’s times and society throughout Raghuvanśam; and through this, I tried to identify an indigenous status of the work in the Rāma-Kathā tradition. To Sum up, Kālidāsa wrote Raghuvanśam with the object of presenting Rājadharma necessary for his times and society; Raghuvanśam is Rāma-Kathā with Raghu dynasty story written for showing Rājadharma in which rules of kings and Brāhmaṇas centered Hindu culture of the Gupta period is reflected.
