Abstract
This paper examines the trends and convergence of the economic performances of 16 major Indian states over the past 4 decades. Contrary to the prediction of neoclassical growth theory, the statistical analysis of data shows a clear tendency for Indian states to diverge in per capita SDP. In 1990s onward, costal states show higher growth rates than inland states suggesting that certain policy measures are urgent to address those enlarging discrepancies.
