강원도 민요의 음악적 특징 －모심는소리.논매는소리 및 통속민요를 중심으로－

Abstract

This is a study on the characteristics of music from Gangwon Province, which examined the region’s indigenous songs as representative of its basic music and the popular folk songs of Gangwon Province, incorporated in the repertoire of virtuosic singers from Gyeonggi Province. Among indigenous songs, I focused on work songs for planting rice seedlings and weeding paddies, which epitomize regional characteristics, and of popular songs I analyzed <Gangwondo Arirang>, <Jeongseon Arirang>, and <Han Obaengnyeon>. The research has produced the following results about these indigenous songs:In terms of tonal organization, most songs are in menari tori, a mode that has different ascending and descending tonal make-up. Rhythmically they have unique features rarely found in other parts of the country, such as free rhythms made up of irregular beats; five beats which are combinations of different beats; three beats made up of triplets; and ‘yeokkeum’, a technique of singing words quickly. These are also characteristic of the popular songs of Gangwon Province: The combined five beats of <Gangwondo Arirang> are derived from an indigenous song entitled <Jajin Arari> the ‘yeokkeum’ technique of <Jeongseon Arari> is from that of an indigenous song called <Yeokkeum Arari> and the triplet-based three beats of <Han Obaengnyeon> are based upon the rhythmic structure of an indigenous song called <Gin Arari>. Furthermore, all three of these songs are in the mode of menari tori. The reason that professional singers of folk songs from the Gyeonggi region regard these three popular songs as representing Gangwon Province is because they indeed manifest musical characteristics of the province, and these characteristics are derived from indigenous songs of the province.
