Abstract

Central Asia taking the important place in the world history has been a transit land where various goods and people were interchanged throughout the Silk Road since the ancient time. However, the most study on the history of Central Asia are likely to focus either on the Mongol Empire or Timurid Dynasty. The history between 16th-19th centuries are less known and least studied and the received wisdom summarized that this period of Central Asia was on the margin of the World history and isolated economically and stagnant culturally. As the mainstream insists, Central Asia located in the heart of the Eurasian Continent has lost the ties with the outside world since the 16th century? Is it the 19th century that Central Asia resumed interacting with the world thank to the Russian advance into the region? How did the Central Asian region interact with India at the ancient time and what do those historical interaction imply to Central Asia and India in the contemporary era? This paper seeks to explore the history of interchange between Central Asia and India- their ‘continued’ commercial and cultural interactions- even after the discovery of the sea-route by the European countries in 16th century. In conclusion, Central Asia has never lost its relations with the world since the ancient time up to the contemporary days and with India particularly the region has been keeping its long-lasting interaction in various sectors. Even during the stagnant period of 16th-19th century of Central Asia, two regions’ relationship remained active and undergone close commercial and cultural contacts. The Mughul Empire had combined the Central Asian elements with South Asian ones and created syncretic, new cultures, and both regions kept absorbing each others' cultures throughout the regular exchanges. Those accumulated interchange now plays positive role in reinforcing some political, economic, cultural interactions between Central Asian states and India today.
