Abstract

This paper deals with the historical background of Russian absorption of the Central Asia and the Russian relations with the area in the post-Soviet era. Until the arrival of Russians in the eighteenth century, the history of the Central Asia was determined by the movements, conflicts, and alliances of Turkic and Mongol tribes. On the eve of the Russian conquest, there was nothing in the Steppe Region which could fairly be described as jurisdiction or administration. The effect of Russian political and cultural influence in Muslim Central Asia was great. The national delimitation was the first stage in the consolidation of Soviet power in this area. By the early 1930s the existing system had been entirely destroyed and collectivization established in its place. The sovietization was begun almost simultaneously on the prevailing system of social grouping, on religion, language and literature, education and the practice of the arts. But the sovietization of Central Asia could not be carried out completely. According to the disunion of the USSR the new Central Asian states declared independence and joined in the CIS. From the onset of independence, these states sought international support to secure their places in the world community, playing the role of bridge between East and West. These states' foreign policy toward Russia has fluctuated widely between cooperation and public condemnation. In the period of post-Soviet transformation, Central Asian states also have found it advantageous to preserve existing links with Russia and themselves. Economic and trade treaties have been signed between Russia and Cental Asia. Russia has retained the role of preferred partner in regional security as well as nonmilitary treaties.
