Abstract

The critics are that the expanding government expenditures has caused adverse effects on Indian economy such as high inflation rather than positive effect on the economic growth. This article analyses that the causality relationship between India’s government expenditures and economic growth in India. The results show that the late government expenditure has growth faster than that of economic growth and sustained at the high level even as the government has tried to reduce the public expenditures. Moreover, non-development expenditures has increased faster than development expenditures. The empirical results reveals that the government expenditures don’t have any effects on the economic growth while GDP cause the growth of both total government expenditures and development expenditures, supporting Wagner’s theory rather than Keynes’s hypothesis. Thus, the government expenditures may make inefficiencies such as crowing-out effects with rapid expanding government expenditures, causing unsustainability of the fiscal policy. The study gives an policy implications that the Korean firms that operates in India have to take head to the expanding fiscal policy of the Indian government, increasing the transaction costs in India.
