이 글은 합성어 형성에 나타나는 의미 변화를 인지언어학적 연구 방법에 따라 연구해 보고자 한 것이다. 합성어의 의미는 단의성 혹은 다의성을 가진다. 다의성 합성어는 다시 결합 요소 중 어느 한 쪽의 의미가 변하는 것과 결합어 전체의 의미가 변하는 것이 있다. 진정한 합성어는 단의적이든, 다의적이든 의미 변화가 나타나는 경우에 해당한다. 합성어의 의미 변화에는 비유가 적용된다. 비유는 사람들이 언어나 대상, 사건에 대해 가지고 있는 관습적, 문화적 경험과 지식에 기초한다. 이러한 비유 중 은유나 환유가 합성어의 의미 변화 기제로 작용한다. 은유만이, 혹은 환유만이 나타나는 경우도 있고, 은유와 환유가 복합적으로 나타나는 합성어도 있다. 합성어의 의미 변화 양상은 합성명사와 합성형용사에서는 단순 양상을 보여주고 있어 핵의미적 관점에 부합된다. 그러나 합성동사는 핵의미적 양상을 띠는 경우도 있고, 의미 변화가 지속적으로 일어나 의미 연쇄의 양상이 나타나는 경우도 있다. 의미 연쇄는 인지주의적 관점에 해당된다. 인지주의적 이론은 핵의미적 관점과 완전 별개의 것이 아니라 핵의미적 관점을 포괄하는 관점이다.
Abstract
A compound word has a single-meaning or multi-meanings. Among multi-meanings compound words, there are compound words in which the meaning of one word changes and also the meaning of the whole compound words changes. It is a real compound word when its meaning changes, whether it has a single-meaning or multi-meanings. Meaning change of compound words occurs due to metaphor and metonymy that are based on one's conventional, cultural experience and knowledge on language, things, and events. They are factors of meaning change of compound words. There are cases in compound words that only metaphor occurs, only metonymy occurs, and both metaphor and metonymy occurs. In the cases of compound-nouns and -adjectives, the form of meaning change of compound words shows simple, which accords with the perspective of core meaning. While, in the cases of compound-verbs, some show the form of core meaning, and some reveal the form of meaning chain that shows continuous change of meaning. Meaning chain is a perspective of cognitive linguistics that includes the perspective of core meaning.
