Abstract

In this paper, based on the fact that light verbs in both Korean and Hindi are different from ones in English, we critically raise a question about the generalizability of the definition and category of light verb discussed by various scholars. By analysing the verbs of ‘karnā’ (Hindi) and ‘hada’ (Korean), we assert that auxiliary verb or serial verb is light verb in Hindi and Korean. The term light verb was introduced by Jespersen (1965) for those verbs which have semantically week meaning and appear with verb-based noun phrases. Since Grimshaw and Mester (1988) regarded Japanese verb ‘suru’ as light verb because of its lack of assigning thematic role in ‘noun+suru (do)’, corresponding Hindi verb ‘karnā (do)’ and Korean verb ‘hada (do)’ have been regarded as light verbs by many scholars. However, this paper asserts that Hindi verb ‘karnā’ and Korean verb ‘hada’ are not light verbs but general verbs because, on the one hand, both ‘karnā’ and ‘hada’ can assign Case to argument and thematic role and, on the other hand, both verbs are allowed to occur determiners. Finally, this paper advances a new argument that Hindi auxiliary verb and Korean V2 in ‘V1-a V2’ are light verbs. According to its definition, light verb has the following attributes: it cannot get argument structure, does not assign thematic role, and retains no semantic content but carries just a sort of nuance. Unlike in English, only auxiliary verbs have such attributes in both Korean and Hindi.
