Abstract

During the Modi regime over the past 10 years (2014-2024), ‘India’s great transition’ occurred not only in politics, the economy, and social culture but also in the fields of the humanities, such as religion, philosophy, language, literature, and history. After the inauguration of the Modi government, the construction of a ‘Hindu India’ was promoted in earnest, and India’s humanities assets were instrumentalized. As a result, the traditional humanities space, which was previously led by the private sector, was transformed into a government-led space. This article is part of a roundtable concluding the research agenda titled Great Transition in India: A Korean Perspective on Indian Studies, under the Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) project of the Institute of Indian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. It represents one of the final outcomes of the seven-year HK+ project, from 2017 to 2024, which focused on the field of humanities. Although only limited results have been achieved in reinterpreting Indian studies from a Korean perspective through interdisciplinary and comparative research on India's great transition, it is argued that one of the significant academic achievements of the HK+ project is the view that the 10 years of Modi's administration constitute ‘India’s great transition.’ This kind of view has not been seen or analyzed by Indian scholars, who may have been unable to escape the political pressures of the 'Hindu India,' and by Western researchers, who often approach the topic from who often approach the topic from an Orientalist perspective.
