Abstract
The aim of this study is to show the relationship between A Thai court dance <Khon> and the Thai national identity. Khon, as a representative traditional performing art, is a national symbol in Thailand. Through the unwavering support of Thai royal family and the government, the king presents himself as the guardian of Thai cultural traditions. <Khon> presents the king’s divinity and symbolizes absolute value of the nation. This creates a sense of belonging and a sense of unity in Thailand and establishes the Thai national identity. In addition, it is interesting that some experimental Thai dance pieces which are based on <Khon> dress up Orientalism.
