Abstract
This study set out to investigate the historical development and modern transformation process of Khon, the Thai masked dance representing the traditional culture of Thailand, and figure out the factors that drove the popularization of traditional culture in the nation. With a special focus on connections between the tourism industry and traditional culture, the study intended to examine the ways that Khon was transformed to obtain popular values in the modern times. Khon, which was used to visualize Ramakien historically, started as a symbolic performance art to represent the royal family of Thailand and has undergone transformations until today according to the rapidly changing environments of the times. The biggest characteristic of Khon's modern transformation process in Thailand is the two-pronged approach: its popularization and generalization has been promoted to target the Thai people with the old image of the royal family kept intact on the one hand, and a strategy has been implemented to make Thai tourism upscale to target foreign tourists based on Khon on the other hand. At the center of these are the Thai government's efforts to inherit the traditional culture and the tourism strategy of combining the government and the people as one.
