TIMSS(Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study)
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the specifics of previous curricula in Mongolia and Korea, the current education system, curriculum documents, and the content of elementary, middle, and high school chemistry, and to provide basic information for future development of two countries. Chemical content elements were analyzed in the 2019 revised curriculum in Mongolia and the 2015 revised curriculum in Korea. As a standard for comparative analysis, TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) 2019 is used as a framework for 4th and 8th grade assessment, and a newly developed standard framework based on NGSS (Next Generation Science Standard) was used for integrating high school chemistry content elements. The test results are as follows. First, the main features and characteristics of the previous curricula of two countries were different. Second, although the current education system, curriculum structure, and science learning objectives were similar, the number of science classes was different by school level. Third, a comparative analysis of the chemistry curriculum, which is the main area of interest in this study, showed that Mongolia covers all elements of the TIMSS 2019 primary and secondary school science assessment framework, while Korea does not cover all elements of the framework; periodic table and reaction rate were not included in Korea curriculum. In high school, the Mongolia curriculum included all the basic concepts of the NGSS-based reference framework, while the Korean curriculum included only some, and elements related to organic chemistry, industry, and everyday life were removed. In the future, when revising the curriculum, Korea needs to consider adding content elements or developing new subjects. In contrast, Mongolia needs to prioritize the integration and consistency of the curriculum considering the relevance of content and level. Through this result, the direction of future science curriculum revision in Mongolia and Korea and implications for educational exchange between the two countries were obtained.
