Abstract

This study is to examine the vanishment, addition, and shift of Sino-Korean fromdictionaries by comparing and contrasting them, and furthermore to explore thecauses of the aspects of the changes. Though Chinese character dictionaries are non‐comparably valuable data containinga large amount of Sino-Korean, previous studies have not dealt with them. Sincewe can clearly find out what courses Sino-Korean in Joseon have come through totheir modern counterparts if we integrate and give order to the Sino-Korean from『Jeonunokpyeon』 to modern dictionaries, it seems that such integration of data isa systematization of a lineage important for the study of Sino-Korean. Consequently, the scope of this study is limited to Chinese characters with morethan one sound among others, and it tries to compare and examine 『Sinjajeon』 andmodern Chinese character dictionaries with reference to the examples with pluralsounds in 『Jeonunokpyeon』. Thus, it attempts to see how sounds of Chinesecharacters in Joseon have been reflected in their modern counterparts. The multiple sounds of Chinese characters contained in 『Jeonunokpyeon』 showvanishment, addition, and shift in modern dictionaries of Chinese characters, butthis article will discuss the aspects of their vanishment.
