Abstract

Korea’s exports to China that have been growing at a rapid rate after the normalization of relations in 1992, but started to show signs of change since 2006. The growth rate of Korea’s exports to China has slowed down since 2006, the trade surplus is decreasing. That is because growth rate of Korea’s material and component export to China slowed down in 2008, but import from China was increased. This paper analyses competitiveness of material and component industries of Korea and China using trade data. Using International Trade by material and component Statistics database based HS-code system. Several methods were used for analysis, trade specialized index, export similarity index, revealed comparative advantage and intra-industry trade index. The results showed that the gap with China was narrowed and that the possibility of competition with China grew very fast. And the results varied with sub industries. It implied that R&D investment was essential to catch Japan and run away from China and that sub industry specialized policy was necessary. With the rise and fall of industrial structure of Korea and China, the number of Korean industries that fall behind China is increasing, and due to China’s rise Korean manufacturers’ ground is continuously shrinking. In the future, a complex division of labor based on technology and competitive advantage will be created and Korea will focus on a horizontal division of labor based on high value creating industries.
