Abstract

U.S. Policy Toward the Taiwan in Post Cold War Era Yoo, Dong-won As tensions across the Since the Taiwan Strait have risen in recent years, some have argued that U.S. policy of strategic ambiguity has outlived its usefulness. In particular, the pursuit of the independence for Taiwan by President Chen Shui-bian elected in 2000 and the pass of the Anti-Secession Law by China in 2005 have challenged the strategic ambiguity policy. In the context, this article focus on the analysis of the U.S. policy toward Taiwan in post cold war era.The three Joint Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act have established the fundamental framework on which U.S. policy toward Taiwan rest. It is ambiguous whether they would stipulate the principles of policy, the fundamental character of the U.S. policy regarding the Taiwan Strait or not. However, the strategic ambiguity policy of the U.S. toward Taiwan can face up to serious challenge, particularly because of the independence pursuit by Taiwan and the pass of the Anti- Secession Law by China.President Bush downgraded U.S. diplomatic treatment of China, while he increased American support to Taiwan. However, after the 9·11 terrorist attacks in America 2001, the Bush administration's policy toward Taiwan changed. U.S. officials now appear to be balancing criticisms of the PRC military buildup opposite Taiwan with periodic cautions and warning to the effect that U.S. support for Taiwan is not unconditional. but has limits. Precisely to defend the peace, America does not support Taiwan independence and opposes unilateral changes to the status quo by either side.
