Abstract

A Study on Usage Conditions of Conjunction Phrases of Complex Sentences Kim, Gi-bum This thesis has examined unmarked complex sentences where conjunction phrases are not used. Because especially when it is ok whether conjunction phrases are used or not, it is difficult to distinguish between the two, I have examined its marked aspects through a markedness concept. The result is as follows.Firstly, logicality is reinforced. It plays as a role of reinforcement or emphasis by using conjunction phrases and hence protruding (highlighting) a relationship between sentences.Secondly, information (signs) relevant to a word order in a thinking system is provided. It performs a function that, in advance, informs that it will happen, by using conjunction phrases in case something is against Chinese people's natural thinking or word order. Thirdly, a focus of meaning is changed. In case of conjunction phrases which are in pairs, a focus of meaning that a speaker tries to convey is changed, depending on where they are used. This thesis has made a fundamental study on usage conditions of conjunction phrases. More detailed and profound studies will have to be carried out in syntactic, conversational and cognitive terms in the future.
