Abstract

This is one in a series of studies dealing with Complex Sentence Constructions in Modern Korean. The particular aim in this paper is to analyse tense characteristics of these constructions on the basis of conjunction endings. The main issues dealt with in this study are as follows: 1) To formulate the concept of conjunction endings and to make a catalogue of these through morphemic analysis. 2) To analyse the constraints on the combination of conjunction endings and tense endings. 3) To analyse tense relations between antecedent and consequent sentences in conjunctive constructions. We arrived at the following conclusions: 1) The characteristics of conjunction endings were found to be similar to those of embedding endings. The main difference between the two is that the former is subject to the following constraints; constraint of the verb in the antecedent sentence, identical subject constraint in S_1 and S_2, constraint on combination with tense endings. Endings analysable into more than two morphemes were not included in our study. Table (19) is a catalogue of conjunction endings made in the course of this study. 2) It was found that, unlike embedding endings, conjunction endings could be combined with tense endings. The exceptions to this were the endings, `-ca`, `-ulswulok`, the reason being that the action in antecedent and consequent sentence happen simultaneously in all contexts, and hence in antecedent sentence is determined by that of the consequent sentence. Other conjunction endings could be combined with tense endings such as, `-ass-` (completion) and `-keyss-` (incompletion). The endings `-eto-`, `-uni`, and `-umyen` could further be combined with the tense ending `-te-` (retrospection). 3) The characteristics of tense relations between the antecedent and consequent sentences in conjunctive constructions are as follows: Tense in the consequent sentense controls that of the antecedent sentence when the conjunction ending cannot be combined with tense ending. When they can be combined with tense ending, there are no control relations in principle. But when the tense of the antecedent sentence is incompletion, the consequent sentence is constrained as to completion and retrospection tenses. Another type of constraints was induced by the sentence type of the consequent sentences.
