Abstract

This article attempts to explain China’s foreign policy since 1949 in the context of the US hegemonic order, Pax Americana. Since 1945, the US has kept its hegemonic world order embedded in the Yalta system, a ‘confrontational concert system’ with the USSR. Under the world order, failure to normalize the relations with the US led China to take “lean to one side(USSR) policy” in the early 1950’s. From the late of the decade, however, China became isolated even from the USSR due to the latter’s rapprochement with the US, which led to China’s third world diplomacy. This thorough estrangement from the Yalta system ended with China’s normalization with the US in 1970’s. The China-US normalization meant China eventually obtained membership of the US hegemonic order. China is not likely to directly challenge to the US hegemony in the context of power asymmetric relations with the US in the near future.
