This study investigates knowledge spillover effects of foreign firms on the three types of regional knowledge creation and innovation capabilities in China. The results suggest that different types of foreign firms bring different knowledge and skills to the host country, therefore generate different spillover effects on regional innovation capabilities. This study also shows that there exist geographic boundaries of spillover effects. Tacit knowledge flowed from the foreign firms tends to diffuse only at the proximal areas. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing the evidence of various spillover effects of different foreign companies and the geographic boundaries of spillover effects.
