눈뫼 허웅 선생이 제시한 음운 변동 현상은 형태소가 음소로 실현될 때 나타나는 음소의 바뀜 현상이다. 음운 변동 현상은 형태부와 음운부 사이의 연관성을 파악하는 데 기초적으로 이해되어야 할 언어 현상이다. 허웅 선생이 제시한 음운 변동 현상을 변동 규칙과 그 적용 순서를 통해 자세히 살펴보면서 선생의 음운 변동 연구의 흐름과 언어연구 방법론에 대해 고찰해본다. 허웅 선생은 구조주의적 관점에서 국어의 변동 현상을 파악하였다. 하지만 변동 규칙의 적용 순서를 고려했다는 점에서 생성적 관점도 아울러 드러난다. 이를 통해 특정 이론에 얽매이기보다는 국어 현상의 설명에 더 치중하려는 선생의 연구 경향을 엿볼 수 있다. 음운 변동 현상, 변동 규칙, 규칙의 적용 순서 등에 있어서 보완되어야 할 점에 대해서도 생각해보고 전체적으로 확장된 변동 규칙의 적용 순서도 제시해본다.
Abstract
This paper discusses the phonemic alternation, which happens in phonological allomorphs. When a morpheme is realized as a phoneme, phonemic alternations take place. This phenomenon was called Byeondong ( 'phonemic alternation') by Heo-Ung. It is regarded as a interface between the morphological level and the phonological level. It should be understood basically in order to catch a relationship between the morphological level and the phonological level. From a structuristic standpoint, Heo-Ung described various phonemic alternations which happen when a morpheme is realized as a phoneme. On the other hand, he showed the rules and their order from a generative standpoint. A extended ordering of the rules is shown newly. It is also shown that there are cases where should be reconsidered and made up for in relation to the application and ordering of the rules.
