Abstract

The Tale of Genji had been classified as a classic from the Middle Age and was circulated among select upper classes. However, since the Muromachi era(室町時代), the development of printing techniques made it possible for ordinary people to read this work. In other words, circulation of knowledge on this work increased. The book was annotated, represented through paintings, simplified, and so on. Various creative inputs were made so that ordinary people could easily understand its contents. The dissemination of such knowledge about it also influenced the interpretation of the paintings of this work. The Tale of Genji had been painted from the Middle Age. A picture of the classic composition Funukiyatai(吹抜屋台), depicting the scene of the story objectively was also distributed in the Edo era(江戸時代) at the same time. Pictures of classical compositions reflect the viewpoint of men with power, but gender cannot be specified in pictures with objective composition. It can be said that this phenomenon is closely related to the dissemination of knowledge on this work. Moreover, in The Tale of Genji’s picture of Kashiwagi(柏木) stealing a glance at Onnasannomiya(女三宮) in the volume of Wakana-jo(若菜上), the background in the image was reduced or deleted, focusing only on the Onnasannomiya and a cat. It can be understood that such a change is the result of reflecting the way the viewer satisfies realistic desire through interpretation of the story in the picture.
