Abstract
본 연구는 인도네시아어와 한국어에서의 칭찬에 대한 응답유형을 교차문화적 관점에서 비교 분석하였다. 또한 필요에 따라 미국영어에서의 반응 또한 비교 대상으로 하였다. 담화완결과업(Discourse Completion Task: 맥락화된 질문에 대한 응답을 도출해내기 위한 조직적인 과업)을 기반으로 하여 외모와 능력에 대한 칭찬에서 두 언어 사이에 반응하는 방식에 어떤 차이가 있는지를 분석하고 또한 사회적 지위(status)의 차이가 반응양식에 어떤 영향을 주는지를 살펴보았다. 칭찬에 대한 응답에 있어서 영어에서는 칭찬이 주는 공(credit)을 수용(Accept)하는 태도가 우세한 반면 한국어와 인도네시아어에서는 그 공을 거절(Reject)하거나 회피(Deflect/Evade)함으로써 겸손함을 보이는 태도가 우세하였다. 특히 한국어는 인도네시아어보다 회피하는 경향을 더 강하게 보이는 점이 관찰되었다. 힘이나 사회적 지위의 우열관계에 따라서 한국어와 인도네시아어는 반응유형에도 차이를 보이는 것으로 관찰되었다. 즉, 능력에 대한 칭찬에 대하여 상사는 부하직원에게 제안(suggestion)과 같은 반응으로 회피하는 태도를 보이는 경우가 많았는데 이러한 표현은 영어에서는 전혀 관찰되지 않았다. 또한 능력에 대한 칭찬에서 부하직원이 상사에게 반응하는 유형은 공을 상대방에게 돌리는 유형(Reassignment)이 압도적으로 많이 관찰되었으며 혹은 앞으로 더욱 일을 잘할 것임을 약속하는 반응도 관찰되었는데 이는 미국영어에서는 관찰되지 않았다. 한국어와 인도네시아에서 공통적으로 관찰되는 이와 같은 반응유형은 “겸손하라”, “간접적으로 표현하라” 그리고 “자신을 낮추어라” 라는 사회-문화적 규범의 영향 때문으로 해석된다. 본 연구는 인도네시아어와 한국어를 모국어로 하는 대화자사이의 교차 문화적 의사소통에 기여할 것으로 기대되며 또한 칭찬 및 반응과 관련된 교과과정이나 교수자료 마련에 기초자료로 제공될 수 있다는 점에서도 의의를 지닌다.
