‘Trickster’ is a kind of character that appears in folktales which features duplicity, heroism, liminality, etc. Among these features, liminality is the most representative feature. To look into the Trạng Quỳnh’s natures as a trickster, this thesis categorized various folktales in to 4 categories. (1)Trạng Quỳnh’s herioic birth and process of growth, (2) Deceiving the ruling hierarchy, (3) Deceiving China (4) Deceiving the god. In each category, I shed a light on the roles of Trạng Quỳnh as a trickster and analyzed what the transmission group’s goals through Trạng Quỳnh were.
Abstract
