초록

Our paper examines the paradoxical nature of democratic perceptions – defined as “How democratically is this country governed today?” – among high-income and Chinese Malaysians. Drawing on data from the World Values Survey, our study explores the factors influencing democratic perceptions and compares the Malaysian case with Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore. The findings reveal a unique phenomenon in Malaysia, where high-income individuals, particularly Chinese Malaysians, exhibit lower levels of satisfaction with democratic governance, signifying the impact of historical ethnic tensions and systemic bias. This paradox challenges the conventional understanding that economic prosperity fosters democratic contentment. The implications of these findings extend beyond financial and democratic disillusionment, emphasizing the need for inclusive democratic governance that addresses socio-economic disparities and promotes equal distribution of resources and opportunities among all ethnic communities.
