Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of FoMO on herd behavior when consumers purchase clothing on an e-commerce platform, Shopee, in Vietnam. It also examines how herd behavior changes depending on the level of consumers’ self-construal. The empirical results show that consumers with high FoMO tend to engage in informational and normative herd behaviors. FoMO not only directly affects herd behaviors, but also indirectly affects herd behaviors through involvement. This study also finds that the effect of FoMO on herd behavior differs according to the level of independent self-construal. For consumers with independent self-construal, the effect of FoMO on herd behaviors weakens. It is also confirmed that the higher the level of independent self-construal, the smaller the effect of involvement on normative herd behavior. On the other hand, there is no moderating role of interdependent self-contrual in the effect of FoMO on herd behavior. In addition, the moderating effect of interdependent self-contrual is not confirmed between involvement and herd behavior.
