초록
This study investigates whether relative per capita CO2 emissions were converging in 39 African countries for the period, 1960–2010. The univariate Lagrange Multiplier (LM) unit root tests are employed to check for the incidence of stochastic convergence, which is a necessary condition for conditional convergence as proposed in the neoclassical model. We further examine the existence of β-convergence, which is considered as a sufficient requirement for conditional convergence. The empirical findings provide evidence that many African countries’ relative per capita CO2 emissions were stochastically converging and also fulfilled the β-convergence criteria. In addition, structural breaks are found in the emissions, and some vital policy implications evolve from the findings.
