이 글의 목적은 서구의 문화철학과 문화학의 관련성을 해명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해서 우리는 문화철학과 문화학의 연구 경향 및 연구 방법론을 토대로 특히 문화철학이 문화학 연구에 어떤 기여를 할 수 있는지에 대해서 논의하고자 한다. 이러한 논의를 전개함에 있어서 필자는 우리에게 가장 대표적인 문화철학자로 알려진 에른스트 카시러(Ernst Cassirer)의 입장에서 접근하고자 한다. 따라서 이 글은 현재까지 진행된 서구의 문화학 연구의 대체적인 경향을 읽을 수 있는 계기를 제공하게 될 것이며, 또한 문화철학과 문화학 연구의 공통점과 차이점을 확인할 수 있는 기회를 제공하게 될 것이다. 이러한 관심에 따라 2장에서는 서구 문화학 연구의 범위, 문화철학과 문화학의 관련성에 대해 고찰하도록 한다. 3장에서는 서구 문화학의 연구 경향과 연구 방법론에 대해서 논의하도록 한다. 그리고 4장은 이 글 전체의 핵심 부분으로서, 문화학의 측면에서 본 카시러 문화철학의 업적과 영향을 다루도록 한다. 특히 이 부분에서는 문화학 연구에 지대한 영향을 미치고 있는 카시러의 논의들 가운데 ‘문화와 상징의 관련성’, ‘문화적 기억’, ‘상모적 세계관’에 대해 집중적으로 논의하고자 한다. 마지막으로 5장에서는 문화철학과 문화학 연구를 수행하는 국내의 환경에서 우리가 궁극적으로 지향해할 측면에 대해 고려해 보면서 논의를 마무리하도록 한다.
Abstract
This thesis aims to show the research and methodology of the western Cultural Science in terms of the tradition of the Philosophy of Culture. Especially, in the study of Cultural Science, we will deal with the research and method of the Philosophy of Culture in Ernst Cassirer. Therefore this study will provide the current inclination in the Cultural Science to us, and supply us with the preliminary data for East Asia Cultural Science. In this concerning, firstly we will discuss the scope of the Cultural Science in the relation to the Philosophy of Culture and the Cultural Science. Secondly, we will show the research and methodology of the Western Cultural Science. Thirdly, we will deal with the importance of the Cassirer's Philosophy of Culture in terms of Cultural Science. In this part, we will concentrate on this point, that is, relation of Culture and Symbol, Cultural Memory, namely, Mnemosyne, the Physiognomical viewpoint. Finally, I will suggest some ideas for the sake of research and methodology of East Asia Cultural Science.
