Abstract
Walter Benjamin once declared the fall of the aura. According to his insight, the aura, i.e. the mystical atmosphere of a traditional painting work that was possible due to the unique and original way of being, was no longer possible with the advent of photography. This is because, in a situation where technically infinite reproduction of the work is possible, the uniqueness and authenticity of the work, which are the sources of the aura, has no longer a place to stand. Although Roland Barthes did not intend it, punctum was a conceptual device that could rescue Benjamin’s aura. In the minute punctual space-time, Barthes provided the ontological basis for the aura of photography to reside. However, unlike the analog photography that Barthes analyzed, the photography we experience today is based on digital media. Digital photos are not only capable of perfect reproduction to the extent that the distinction between originals and copies is impossible, but also perfectly manipulated in principle. In fact, analog film printing was only capable of incomplete reproduction. Only with the advent of digital photography did we enter the era of simulacra, the era of perfect technological reproduction that Benjamin had vaguely foreseen. If everything is reducible to digital information of 0 and 1, not only perfect reproduction but also numerical manipulation of images are possible. In the digital age, any image can be reduced to a pixel unit, and numerical calculations of the underlying matrix of 0 and 1 are possible. Is the punctum, which was the central concept of Barthes’s photography theory, even possible in digital media? Is it possible in digital media that breaks down the dichotomy between virtual and real? Like Benjamin’s aura, shouldn’t Barthes’s concept of punctum be discarded or revised? Should we understand that Benjamin’s prophecy of the fall of the aura has come true only in the digital age? This paper seeks answers to these questions. In other words, this article intends to deal with the topic of ‘the fate of Punctum’ in digital media. Since the potential of digital has not yet been fully revealed, our answer has to remain at a tentative level. However, it would be important to examine the change of the image according to the change of the medium, focusing on the concept of punctum. This thesis will first examine the status of the punctum in the history of photography theory and previous studies, and then summarize it while reinterpreting Barthes’s concept of the punctum. Next, we will look at the main characteristics of digital images along with the ontological meaning of digital media, and finally look at the fate of Punctum. According to our tentative conclusion, Punctum will never disappear as long as human beings exist. Because it has a shared destiny with human being.
