공학자는 업무와 관련된 윤리적 문제를 합리적으로 해결할 수 있어야 한다. 그러나 대학에는 그러한 능력을 기르기 위한 효과적인 과정이 마련되어 있지 않다. 이 글에서 나는 공학윤리 수업에서 전통적인 도덕 이론은 물론 윤리적 논증에 관한 이론도 다루어야 한다고 주장한다. 왜냐하면 비판적 사고는 공학자가 윤리적 문제를 해결할 때 꼭 필요한 기술이기 때문이다. 그리고 나는 논증을 평가하는 기술이 도덕적 갈등 상황에서의 합리적인 의사 결정에 어떻게 활용되는지를 검토한 후, 적절한 의사 결정 모델을 한 가지 제시한다. 끝으로 도덕 이론은 윤리적 의사결정에서 사용될 수 없다는 반론을 검토한 후, 그것이 윤리적 논증의 역할에 관한 나의 주장을 약화시킬 수 없음을 보인다.
Abstract
The engineers must resolve the ethical problems that arise in their works. However, there are no effectively designed courses that the engineering students can take for this purpose. I argue that the students should be taught how to make the ethical argumentation in addition to learning the traditional moral theories, since critical thinking is a necessary skill that the engineers can use to resolve the ethical problems. I examine that in what way we apply the ethical argumentation skills to the decision-makings in moral conflicts, and then I suggest a decision- making model that will work appropriately. In the course, I review the critique that the moral theories are not suitable to being used in decision-makings in moral conflicts, then conclude that this critique does not weaken my argument for the necessity of the ethical argumentation.
