재현으로서의 남성성에 대한 젠더문화론적 분석: 비보이 현상을 중심으로

후기 근대의 문화변동 속에서 젠더정체성은 다양하게 형성되고 재현되고 있다. 이 논문은 비보이 현상에서 남성성이 재현되는 방식을 추적하여 이와 연동된 젠더정체성의 다양한 형성 과정을 문화사회학적으로 해석함으로써 젠더정체성의 문화적 재현에 대한 이론적 논의를 보다 활성화하는 데 목적을 두고 이루어졌다. 즉, 비보이 현상에 구현된 문화적 재현으로서의 남성성을 시대적 상황의 맥락과 연결하여 해석해보고자 하는 시도를 내용적 중심으로 삼았다. 구체적으로 보자면 현재 하위문화에서 대중문화와 문화산업으로 발전한 장르 중 가장 주목받는 공연인 비보이 현상이 ‘한류’의 대표 상품으로 부상하는 상황을 배경으로 하여, 비보이의 기원(origin)을 이루고 있는 ‘저항성’, ‘반항성’, ‘공격성’으로 재현되는 남성성을 기존의 이론적 논의와 연결하여 분석하고, 비보이 공연에서 보여주는 구체적인 몸짓에서 남성성이 어떻게 육체적으로 표현되는지 해석하고자 하였다. 또한 이 분석을 통해 다양하게 재현되고 진화하고 있는 젠더정체성 형성을 비롯한 포스트모던한 문화적 변동의 기류를 배경으로, 비보이 현상에서는 아직도 잔존하는 스테레오 타입으로서의 남성성의 특징과, 메트로섹슈얼이나 위버섹슈얼 등 복합적인 젠더정체성으로 진화하는 양상이 중첩적으로 나타나고 있음을 발견하게 되었다. 이로써 문화산업에서의 젠더정체성이 후기 근대의 문화변동에 대한 일종의 지표로서 상징적 위상을 가질 수 있다는 이론적 가설이 성립함을 보여줄 수 있었으며, 앞으로 다양한 문화상품에 대한 보다 세밀한 분석을 수행함으로써 시대적 문화 조류를 구체적 개념과 문화적 흐름을 통해 통찰적으로 해석할 수 있는 이론적 예측의 다양한 가능성을 발견하게 되었다.
Abstract
This research is focused on to analyze the mode of representation of masculinities in the b-boying performance in the post-modern context of cultural flow, and to interpret the diverse formations of gender identities with the methodology of cultural sociology. Furthermore, the aim of this analysis is to rouse up the theoretical discussion on the cultural representation of gender identities more actively. For this purpose, the analysis consists of four main contents as followings: masculinities as cultural representation of b-boying in the context of contemporary societal background; the theoretical discussion on masculinities; masculinities which are expressed in the origin of b-boying as the characteristics like ‘resistance’, ‘insurbordination’, and ‘attack’; the physical representation in the b-boy performance. One of the representative results of this analysis is that there is a layered spectrum of masculinities in the phenomenon of b-boying, from traditional masculinities as stereotypes even to the metro-sexual or the über-sexual. As a concluding, the theoretical hypothesis established at the beginning of this research can be confirmed that gender identities in cultural industry can have symbolic position as indicators for cultural change in the post-modern society. With more precise analysis on the representation of gender identities in diverse cultural products, the theoretical prediction of the interaction between gender identities and cultural change in global scale can be established and connected with contemporary cultural flow.
