Abstract
The aim of the dissertation is to explore how East Asian male migrants negotiate their masculine identity and ethnicity in the West. The study particularly focuses on the experience of South Korean male migrants in the United Kingdom. The practices of masculinities differ in specific socio-economic contexts. Moreover, the power structure of masculinities is hierarchically constructed interplaying with class, sexuality and ethnicity. However, as masculinity study has been initiated from a Western perspective, there has been less attention on East Asian masculinities. By investigating the different experiences of East Asian masculinities in and out of the country, this paper examines how the symbolic and material power structure of gender influence on the everyday lives of individuals and how gender, class and ethnicity interplay with each other. In undertaking the research, semi-tructured and in-depth interviews were conducted. Part of this investigation looked at how Asian masculinity is represented in the media, and the impact such epresentations may have on immigrant experience and identity.
