본고는 크게 다음과 같은 내용을 담는다. 첫째, 본고는 미술관을 일종의 경쟁하는 사회적 행위자(social actor)로 규정하는 다양한 이론적 자원들을 살펴 볼 것이다. 사회적 행위자로서 미술관의 실천은 크게 전시기획, 네트워크 구성, 담화생산의 세 가지로 구분된다. 미술관은 이러한 실천들을 통해 예술장 내에서 상징자본을 획득하기위해 투쟁하며, 이러한 투쟁을 통해 예술장의 효과를 사회적 공간으로, 사회적 영향을 예술장 내 차별적인 효과로 변환한다. 둘째, 본고는 소위 ‘확장된 미술관’ 모델을 제시하고 한국근현대미술사에서 관찰되는 ‘조선미술전람회(朝鮮美術展覽會(이하 ‘선전’)’의 사례를 통해 확장된 미술관의 사회적 실천이 권력과 결합함으로서 사회공간을 재편한 사례를 간략하게 검토할 것이다. 셋째, 본고는 사회적 행위자로서 미술관에 관한 이론적 논의를 2006년에 열린 ‘광주비엔날레’(6회)와 ‘부산비엔날레’(4회)에 대한 현장조사에 적용함으로써 확장된 미술관 개념의 현재적 적용가능성을 검토한다. 연구자는 2006년과 2008년 서강대학교 사회학과에서 개설한 ‘문화사회학’ 강좌 수강생들과 비엔날레를 비롯해 다양한 형태의 미술관을 답사하였으며, 여기에는 주로 비엔날레의 사례만을 담기로 한다. 미술관의 사회적 작동을 살펴보기 위한 사례로 비엔날레를 선택한 이유는 미술관의 실천이 사회적 층위와 교차할 수 있는 가장 전면적인 방식일 수 있기 때문이다.
Abstract
In this paper, I will explore various theoretical and empirical resourses that show the social operation of museum. I will redefine the museum as social actor whose practices go beyond the closed boundary of museum that is supposed by so called ‘internal perspective of museum. In opposite to such closed concept of museum, I would suggest the concept of ‘extended museum’ where the various artistic, socio-political effects of museum saturate over the full space of society. The operation of museum as social actor changes not only art field but also the whole structure of society. I will examine the possibilities of museum as social actor and the concept of extended museum by investigating some empirical examples. Above all, Biennale is the key case that can shows the core of social practice of extended museum. I performed a field study in 6th Busan, and 4th Gwangju Biennale. I would reorganize the processes and results in terms of sociological perspective. In doing so, I will show that the museum is the core subject of exhibition, network construction, and the discourse production in Biennale.
