Abstract
Despite the diagnosis that gift exchange has become a core mechanism of value production in digital capitalism, online gift exchange still serves the function of recognizing the presence of others and fostering social solidarity through mutual acknowledgment. This paper aims to explore how market exchange and gift exchange coexist in hybrid forms in online spaces, and how materiality such as algorithm refracts this process. To this end, interviews were conducted with amateur YouTube creators in their 20s, a prominent demographic on social media, to investigate what kinds of gifts they give and receive, how these exchanges shape new social relationships among them, and how YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, an important non-human actor, reconfigures these reciprocal social relationships. Furthermore, the study examined participants’ evaluations of the relationships not only among users but also between creators and a corporation. In the digital economy, gift exchange exists not merely as an ideology but as a reality in which users actively give and receive “digital gifts,” constituting an order in its own right. However, as this gift exchange intersects with materialities such as recommendation algorithms, new interpretations and practices emerge, resulting in what this paper calls “automated reciprocity.” Through an examination of gifting practices on YouTube, this study investigates the intersection of reciprocity and materiality, exploring a new form of reciprocity within the digital economy. “Automated reciprocity” demonstrates that the traditional dichotomy between gifts and commodities is inadequate for understanding social practices in the digital world, highlighting the need for continued theoretical and empirical research in this area.
