성 암브로시우스의 추도사와 편지 속 포도주

술은 오늘날 우리 사회에서도 큰 비중을 차지하고 있을 뿐 아니라, 가톨릭 교회 역사안에서도 중요한 위치를 차지해 왔다. 하지만 그 위치에 비해 교부들이 술을 어떻게 바라보았는지에 대해서는 그다지 연구가 많지 않은 실정이다. 본고에서는 이에 착안하여 여러 교부 가운데 성 암브로시우스를 선택하고, 그의 저서 중 특별히 추도사와 편지글을 중심으로 포도주의 의미를 파악해 보려 한다. 포도주는 암브로시우스의 추도사 중『형 사티루스의 죽음』과『발렌티니아누스의 죽음』에서 6번, 편지 모음집인『서간집』과『추가 서간집』에서 21번, 총 27번 사용되었다. 암브로시우스는 여기서 성경을 14번 직접 인용하는데, 이것은 암브로시우스의 성경 주해서에서 나타난 성경의 직접 인용 비율보다 훨씬 높은 것으로, 암브로시우스가 추도사와 편지글 속에서 성경을 더 자유롭게 인용하였음을 보여준다. 이러한 성경 인용을 배경으로, 포도주가 상징적 의미를 지닐 경우는 하느님의 은총과 축복을 드러내는 긍정적 측면이 잘 드러난다. 하지만 현실의 포도주를 언급할 때는 긍정적인 측면 뿐 아니라 부정적인 측면도 함께 고려되며, 암브로시우스는 이를 통하여 무엇보다 적절한 포도주의 사용을 강조한다.
Abstract
Alcohol occupies an important proportion in today’s society but also has occupied an important place in the history of the Catholic Church. However, compared to its status, there are not many studies on how the Fathers of the Church viewed alcohol. Focused on this aspect, this paper selects St. Ambrose among the various Fathers of the Church and tries to understand the meaning of wine, especially focusing on his eulogy and letters among his writings. The term ‘Wine’ was used a total of 27 times, 6 times in De excessu fratris and De obitu Valentiniani among Ambrosius’ eulogies, and 21 times in Epistulae and Epistulae extra collectionem traditae, collections of letters. Ambrose quotes directly from the Bible 14 times here, which is a much higher quotation rate than the direct quotation rate from the Bible in Ambrose’s commentary on the Bible, showing that Ambrose quoted the Bible more freely in his eulogy and letters. With the background of these biblical quotations, the positive aspect of revealing God’s grace and blessings is well revealed while wine has a symbolic meaning. However, when referring to wine in reality, not only positive aspects but also negative aspects are considered, and through this, Ambrosius emphasizes the proper use of wine.
