With this in mind, we will take a look at the works of Monika Maron, one of the leading writers today, to get a sense of elderly life in German literature. Monika Maron, along with Martin Walser, has been continuously publishing works (esp. her trilogy Endmoränen, Ach Glück and Zwischenspiel) with theme of the elderly life. Her noble especially features the connection of the elderly life with a specific time period. The protagonist in Endmoränen lives in rural village, feels solitude, fail to seek any meaning from the relationship with her husband, and yet, she still makes a great effort to find a new hope. All of this colligate with the time period of the setting based on the writer’s experience that is now considered an elderly herself. Maron experienced three different political system of Germany; the Nazis, Eastern Germany, Republic after reunification. After all this experience, the way she feels after becoming an elderly may be different from Walser, who experienced one less of the system. It is also safe to say that Eastern Germany had the greatest affected on her since she spent 40 years from her adolescence years to entering an elderly of her life. Maron points out through her books like Ach Glück und Zwischenspiel that the feelings achieved in old age like freedom and happiness aren’t forcefully drawn from solitude and resignation. She points out that true freedom and happiness can only be attained by giving up ambition. Maron’s literatures successfully picture the theme of true happiness.
