Abstract

In this paper I examine what role Xenophanes' thought played in the development of the early history of philosophy in which argumentation came to the fore as the essential feature of the philosophical discourse method. I challenge the theology-centered approach to his discourse and try to go beyond Curd's three-stage approach and the failure of comprehending the unity of his work. Through the analysis of the hitherto almost ignored ‘peripheral’ fragments, I make the following suggestions: that his meta-symposium in the symposiac poems added to epistemological discussions makes up his meta-discourse, the special feature of which being the intended ambiguity of some key words; that such ambiguity leads to the ambiguity of nomos, and ultimately to nomos-physis distinction; and that, due to such epistemological and meta-discursive view he secured, his discourse presupposes some consciousness that discourse should be backed up by argumentative justification. We can observe that Xenophanes' discourse is not still in the assertive stage but, going all the way round passing through the reflexive stage, now in transition to the argument-presenting stage. In addition, we can find our way out of the established opinion on the true development of the tradition of argumentation. We can reconfirm that the essential features of philosophy do not consist in some particular figure's singular activity, but in the ‘tradition’ of the dialectic and dialogue in which one offers one's own story made out of speculation and others critically meditate on it through cooperative inquiry, ultimately growing it as common asset.
