이 논문은 크세노파네스 신론의 정체성에 관한 연구이다. 호메로스와 헤시오도스의 전통적 신화를 비판적으로 풍자한 크세노파네스의 신론이 다신론인지 일신론인지에 관한 오래된 논쟁이 있다. 이 논쟁에 대하여 이 논문은 일신론으로 해석하는 입장을 옹호하며, 일신론적 입장이 그의 신론과 함께 그의 사상 전반을 잘 이해하기 위해 다신론적 입장보다 더 적절함을 논할 것이다. 그리고 이 과정에서 다신론, 특히 단일신론의 해석이 가지는 문제점이 비판적으로 검토될 것이며, 크세노파네스 신론의 고유한 특징은 ‘부정의 길’과 ‘긍정의 길’을 통해 기존 신화의 ‘탈인간화’ 및 기존 신화에서 설명하던 물리적 자연세계의 ‘탈신성화’로 규정될 것이다.
Abstract
This paper is a study on the identity of Xenophanes’ theology. There is an old debate about whether Xenophanes’ theology, which has criticized the traditional myths of Homer and Hesiod, is polytheistic or monotheistic. On this controversy, this paper defends the monotheistic interpretation, and argues that the monotheistic position is more proper than the polytheistic position for a better understanding of the overall characters of his thoughts together with his theology; in this process, the problems of the polytheistic interpretation, especially of the henotheistic one, are critically examined, and the inherent characteristics of Xenophanes’ theology will be defined through ‘via negativa’ and ‘via affirmativa’ as ‘the dehumanization’ of existing myths and ‘the desacralization’ of the physical world as described in existing myths.
