초록
From the early 1960s to the mid-90s there exists in (West) Germany a unique research group called Poetik und Hermeneutik. This group traverses the heterogeneous borderlines between disciplines, generations, and nation-states. It thereby produces radically new discourses and creates a novel culture of research. To this academic avant-garde belong the philosopher Hans Blumenberg and the political theologian Jacob Taubes. Over the three decades the members of Poetik und Hermeneutik had instigated within themselves many different controversies over various themes. Among them, one might single out the following two debates: 1) over the genealogy and relationship of gnosticism to surrealism, and 2) over the connection between mythos and dogma. As it happens, the two controversies took shape mainly by and between Blumenberg and Taubes. Starting with presenting the concise history of Poetik und Hermeneutik, this essay proceeds to reexamine from a meta-critical point of view the two controversies between the philosopher and the political theologian. The metaphorology established by Blumenberg and the eschatology espoused by Taubes lock horns with each other over the question of time, or Zeitlichkeit. Blumenberg and Taubes did their best to outargue one another in different ways, but their endeavors brought about remarkable ramifications. ‘Absolute metaphor,’ the key concept of Blumenberg’s theory, and the Paulian-Marcionite gnosticism to which Taubes adheres come to unite by way of complicated paradoxes in grappling with the enigma of the eschaton. By reconstructing the two controversies between Blumenberg and Taubes, this essay aims at reassessing the reasons why we should strive for organizing research group anew and for contriving academic discourses that distinguish themselves from the traditional ones.
