필자는 본고에서 흄의 자아 형이상학 체계에 대한 적절한 진단과 처방을 꾀한다. 흄은 인성론 1권, 4부, 6절 논의(“인격의 동일성에 관하여Of Personal Identity”)에서 자신이 앞서 이미 확립한 관념 연합의 원리에 기대 이룩되는 자아론의 정당성을설파한다. 하지만 그는 이후의 논의(“부록Appendix”)에서 이내 그렇게 세운 자아론에 흠결이 보이기 때문에 자아 문제는 재차 논구될 필요가 있다고 말한다. 물론이러한 흄의 고백이 의미하는 내용은 문제되는 흠결이 무엇인지 밝혀지면 자연스레드러날 것이지만, 전거가 제한적이기 때문에 그가 주목하는 흠결을 규명하기 위한작업에는 해석적 노력이 수반된다. 필자는 이 요구를 줄곧 염두에 두는 가운데이제 다음과 같은 순서로 논의를 전개할 것이다. 첫째, 가장 먼저 인성론 1권, 4부, 6절 논의에서 표면화된 흄의 자아론의 주요 특징들을 개괄한다. 둘째, 이어지는부록에서 표출되는 흄의 불만이 자아 문제에 특히 집중되는 상황을 고려해서여타 문제들과 차별화된 특수성을 지니는 자아 문제를 그가 뒤늦게 자각하기때문에 그 문제를 재검토할 필요성을 역설하는 것이라고 주장한다. 셋째, 포겔린의해석적 노력을 보완해서 흄의 자아론이 결국 칸트적 통찰을 일정 정도 수용한논의로 거듭나는 모습을 드러낸다.
Abstract
This paper aims to present a proper prescription and treatment of Hume’s metaphysical system of the self. In Bk. 1, Pt. 4, Sec. 6, “Of Personal Identity” of A Treatise of Human Nature, Hume proclaims with confidence the validity of his theory of the self on the basis of the already previously established principles of association of ideas. In the Appendix, however, suddenly, he expresses his complaint about his former views and wishes to revisit them once again. We need to figure out what has plunged Hume into despair. But because of the limited textual evidence, any attempt to understand it becomes a matter of interpretation. First and foremost, I provide an overview of central features of Hume’s theory of the self that appears in Bk. 1, Pt, 4, Sec. 6. Second, I argue that Hume’s despair in the Appendix is due to his belated realization of the peculiarity of the problem of the self. I defend this doctrine by showing in particular that Hume’s despair exclusively concentrates on the problem of the self and does not point to other matters of fact at all. Third and finally, I close this paper by supplementing Fogelin’s interpretation with some Kantian insight, which will make Hume’s theory of the self more convincing.
