이 논문의 목적은 데이빗 흄(David Hume)이 근대 자연과학과 어떻게 관련되는지를 탐구하는 데에 있다. 그 수평적인 관련을 보면, 흄은 근대 자연 과학의 방법과 성과들에 자극되고 고무되어 이러한 방법을 인문·사회 과학의 주제들에 확대 적용하려 시도한 초창기의 인문사회학자로 이해된다. 수직적 관련에서 보면, 흄은 과학적 지식의 인식론적 기초와 밀접히 결부되어 있다. 이렇듯 17,18세기 자연 과학이 흄의 철학에 종적·횡적으로 미친 영향을 재확인하고 재인식하는 일이 이 논문의 일차적인 목적이다. 이러한 탐구를 위해 논자는, 먼저 흄 철학의 과제와 방법에 미친 뉴튼 과학의 영향을 살펴본다. 첫째로 논자는 뉴튼의 실험 철학의 출현 배경과 그 내용을 살펴보며, 나아가서 뉴튼이 가설을 거부하는 입장의 배경과 그 진의를 검토한다. 둘째로 논자는 흄의 <논고> 서론에서 보이는 철학의 과제와 방법에서 관찰되는 뉴튼 과학의 영향을 검토한다. 다음으로 논자는 근대의 새로운 과학적 지식의 기초가 되는 근본 신념들의 정당화 문제에 대한 흄의 견해를 그가 <논고>에서 다룬 주제들의 순서대로 살펴볼 것이다. 인과성, 물리적 대상의 존재, 자기 동일적 자아의 문제가 그것이다.나아가서 이러한 탐구를 통해 흄 철학의 성격을, 특히 흄의 자연주의의 성격을 보다 분명히 이해하는 것이 이 논문의 또다른 목적이기도 하다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relation between David Hume and Modern natural Science. Considering the aspects of their horizontal relation, Hume can be understood as an early humanitist who made an attempt to apply the methods of Modern Science extensively to the topics of humanities as he was stimulated and encouraged by the achievement of Modern Science.In their vertical relation's aspect, Hume can be said to be closely related to epistemological foundation of scientific knowledge. In this respect, one of the prime aims of this parer is to reconfirm and recognize horizontal and vertical influences of natural science during 17th and 18th centuries on Hume philosophy. For this purpose, the writer investigates the effect of Newton science on the tasks and methods of Hume philosophy. First of all, the background of the emergence of Newton's experimental philosophy and its content will be explored. Furthermore the context in which Newton denies Hypothesis and its real meaning will be examined. Secondly, the influence of Newton science that is evident on the philosophical tasks and methods shown in the Introduction of Hume's Treatise will be addressed. Next to this, the writer will take a careful look at Hume's views on the problem of justification of basic beliefs that provide the foundation of new scientific knowledge as the same order as the topics appear in the Treatise.Another aim of this parer is to have a clear understanding of the nature of Hume philosophy and furthermore, Hume's naturalism through this study.
