An analysis of the [Cause-Effect] Structure of the Lexical Compound Verb

Linguists have suggested various analyses regarding which Japanese lexical compound verbs in the form of [Verb-Verb] have the structure of [cause-effect]. This study examines structural conditions and characteristics of the causative compound verb involved in the [cause-effect] relation with regard to verb derivation. The structural characteristics of the compound verb depend on transitivity between the elements of the compound verb as well as the time relation and intention. The causative compound verb may only occur in intransitive sentences assuming ‘surplus’ and ‘reflexive use’, and the object involved in changes is restricted to ‘human’. The structural difference between the causative compound verb resulting from direct compounding and the one from derivation is explained as follows: while the former has the structure of [action-change], [action-state], or [state-state], the latter only has the structure of [action-state]. In a structural analysis of compound verbs, it is necessary to examine not only the meaning changes in the preceding and following verbs in a compound verb, but also their relations with the noun phrase 「ヴォイス」.
