초록

This paper discusses the differences between two types of compound verbs in Japanese (i.e., Lexical compound verbs vs. Syntactic compound verbs: Kageyama 1993) within the Distributed Morphology framework (Halle & Marantz 1993). Lexical and syntactic compounds differ from one another in their compositionality, productivity and syntactic behavior. In this paper, it is argued that these differences are straightforwardly explained in terms of whether compound verbs are root-derived or word-derived.

Abstract

This paper discusses the differences between two types of compound verbs in Japanese (i.e., Lexical compound verbs vs. Syntactic compound verbs: Kageyama 1993) within the Distributed Morphology framework (Halle & Marantz 1993). Lexical and syntactic compounds differ from one another in their compositionality, productivity and syntactic behavior. In this paper, it is argued that these differences are straightforwardly explained in terms of whether compound verbs are root-derived or word-derived.
