Abstract

This article starts from the question, that is, whether debaters’ sympathy plays an important role in value-debate, and if so, then how it does. It aims at supporting the communication level in which, including compassion, emotion works. So I examine Nussbaum’s these of compassion, which proposes literary imagination as a part of public rationality. According to Nussbaum, formal property and emotional contents in novel invoke the imagination about others’ life and the reflection of readers’ sense of values. Especially, she proposes Wayne Booth’s concept of “co-duction” in reading and discussion. For it reveals the ethical and political implication in literature. According to her, the thought that sincere citizens and good judges exclude emotional elements completely, as they judge right, are backed up with the assertion that emotion is brutal force and not connected with reason. Nussbaum’s critique focuses on the cognitive aspect of emotion: emotion has intensional, intelligent element, that is, belief and judgement. Based on that critique, this article examines the appropriate aspect of compassion. Nussbaum’s cognitivism overlooks the physical aspects of emotion, but makes possible thinking positively about the relation of compassion with public judgement through the subtle analysis of the upheavals of thought, that is, the intelligence of emotions. And it provides ample insights about reading and discussion education.
