소크라테스는 종종 윤리적 이기주의자로 분류되곤 한다. 하지만 이기주의에 대한 상식적인 이해에서는 소크라테스가 윤리적 이기주의자라는 주장은 쉽게 이해되는 주장은 아니다. 사실 소크라테스를 윤리적 이기주의자로 이해하는 학자들 사이에도 그 때 윤리적 이기주의가 어떤 의미인지에 대해서는 상당한 이견이 존재한다. 이 논문에서는 소크라테스와 윤리적 이기주의에 대해 최근에 제기된 몇몇 연구를 일별하고 소크라테스가 윤리적 이기주의자인지 그리고 혹시 소크라테스를 윤리적 이기주의자로 분류한다 하더라도 그 때의 윤리적 이기주의는 과연 어떻게 이해해야 할지를 다룬다. 필자는 블라스토스를 따라 덕과 행복의 관계를 비-도구적인 관계로 이해하는데 그렇게 행복의 내용을 덕이 채우게 될 경우 소크라테스가 행복주의eudaimonism, 즉 모든 인간은 행복을 자신의 모든 행위의 궁극적인 목적으로서 욕구한다는 주장을 받아들인다고 하더라도 이 사실은 소크라테스가 이기주의를 받아들인다는 결론을 함축하지 않는다. 소크라테스를 이기주의자로 이해하는 연구자들은 소크라테스의 이기주의를 양성 이기주의benign egoism, 즉 각자의 이익이 서로 상충하지 않는 형태의 이기주의로 이해할 것을 제안하는데 사실 추구하는 좋음들의 본질적인 성격 때문에 각자가 추구하는 좋음들이 서로 상충하지 않는다면 그런 사상을 굳이 이기주의로 이해하는지 의문을 제기할 수 있다. 결론적으로 학자들이 ‘윤리적 이기주의’를 학문용어로서 약정적으로 정의하는 한에서는 소크라테스에게 적용시킬 수 있다 하더라도 애초에 행복주의와는 달리 이기주의/이타주의의 틀로 소크라테스를 접근하는 것이 부적절한 만큼 소크라테스를 윤리적 이기주의와 연관시키는 것은 득보다 실이 많다고 주장한다.
Abstract
Ethical egoism is often attributed to Socrates. Given the common-sense notion of egoism, this attribution of ethical egoism to Socrates would seem perplexing to ordinary readers outside the academic circle. Even among the scholars who attribute ethical egoism to Socrates, there is a considerable controversy on what kind of ethical egoism is at issue. I go over some of the recent scholarly contributions on this subject and discuss whether Socrates is an ethical egoist and, if he is, in what sense of ethical egoism and eventually whether the ethical egoism attributed to Socrates is to be named egoism. I take sides with Vlastos in construing the relation between virtue and happness to be non-instrumental. Given this interpretation in which the content of happines is filled with virtues, Socrates’ eudaimonism does not imply egoism. Scholars who adopt the egoistic interpretation of Socrates suggest that Socrates’ egoism is benign egoism, that is, egoism in which an agent’s interest does not conflict with that of others. I raise doubt as to whether it is adequate to describe such a view as egoistic. I argue that the framework of egoism and altruisim, as opposed to the framework of eudaimonism, is not adequate to approach Socratic ethics and brings more harm than good.
